Apple’s Product Development Process – Inside the World’s Greatest Design Organization
Apple’s Product Development Process may be one of the most successful design processes ever implemented. With a valuation that exceeds $2 trillion, there’s a lot that designers can learn from Apple and introduce into their own design environments. Apple is a notoriously secretive business. In Steve Jobs’ time at the company it would have been near impossible to find out about the internal workings of the business. This isn’t surprising when a business’s market advantage is its design approach. It’s worth keeping it under wraps. However, Adam Lashinsky, the author of Inside Apple: How America’s most Admired and Secretive Company Really Works has been given a look at the process. While there are still aspects of the way that Apple works that are shrouded in secrecy, you can get a good idea of the overall high level process through this book. And in this article, we’ve distilled the key takeaways from the book. Read full article

Foldable Smartphones: New Devices, New Opportunities
Mobile phones have evolved dramatically, with displays growing from 1.5–2.5 inches pre iPhone to 6.1–6.8 inches today. However, this growth has practical limits, as larger screens compromise single-handed use and portability. It has led to mobile-device specialization, with a range of sizes from large tablets to tiny smartwatches, each with different benefits and use cases. Recently, a new type of smartphone that leverages the technology of bendable screens has emerged; the foldable smartphone may reduce the need to own multiple mobile devices. Is WCAG 2 flawed? A better way to determine text contrast for readability
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for readability, has always been a good way to ensure content on digital products is accessible. However, if you go deeper into the readability rabbit hole, you will find it’s far from perfect. WCAG 2 is designed to be user-friendly and easily understandable for everyone. However, its simplicity is also its major drawback. It only considers the luminance contrast of colors, disregarding how humans perceive them. In other words, WCAG 2’s mathematical approach lacks perceptual accuracy and fails to align with human perception. This method can lead to issues for readers in certain situations. It is unsurprising, considering that WCAG has been around for over 15 years. While it has served its purpose well, it’s now time to embrace a more effective approach. Read full article

UI spacing cheat sheet: a complete guide
I’ve noticed that many designers rely solely on intuition when it comes to spacing, and it’s not surprising. Correct spacing may appear simple, but it’s a skill that requires practice to master. Moreover, every product has its unique spacing system, and no rigid rules govern spacing. Instead, there are still best practices to follow. That’s when the 4 or 8-point grid systems come into play. They bring clarity and simplicity by limiting your options and making your life easier. However, even with these systems, the rules can still be vague. You have to decide which spacing option works best for your design, be it 8, 12, or 16 points. Maintaining design consistency can still be a challenge. In this article, I’ll introduce you to the 8-point grid system and show you how to better apply it dynamically in your designs. Read full article
